A few weeks ago I was invited to the prescreening of this motion picture. Here’s my Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day Movie Review. Today is the premiere so take your family this weekend and let me know what you think.
Alexander is an eleven year old boy who suffers a day filled with misadventures and when he tries to fill in his family in on his misfortune it turns out they don’t understand him, so he wishes that for just one day his family would share his bad luck. Enter the birthday wish and mayhem ensues. For the next 24 hours his family goes through an unusual type of hilarious hell predesigned to make the audience laugh.
The older brother, in desperate need to get his driver’s license so he can drive his girlfriend on a perfect date to his junior prom, destroys the car. His sister gets a cold right before she has to star on the school Peter Pan musical so she overdoses on cold medicine and causes havoc on the premiere. His unemployed but optimistic father has to take the baby on his first job interview in months and the baby interrupts the process by eating a green marker he finds in his suitcase. His mother has to deal with work related chaos over the misspelling of a single, but very important, word on the release of her company’s new children’s book. However, at the end of the day it all comes together for the and Alexander and they manage to throw him an awesome birthday party with an Australian theme.
The parents are played by Steve Carrell and Jennifer Gardner, the sister and brother are played by Dylan Minnette and Kerris Dorsey and Alexander is played by 12 year old Australian actor with a lisp Ed Oxenbould . Together they give the feel of a typical suburban American family going through tough times but keeping a positive attitude.
The film is funny, fast paced and it has a positive message. No matter how bad life gets there’s always a bright side, it just takes a change in attitude to realize it.
