Ingredients

  • 1 package puff pastry sheets thawed
  • 12 ounces queso blanco or queso de freir
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  • Cut the gouda cheese into sticks about 2 inches long and 1/2 inch thick.
  • Lightly flour surface and roll puff pastry sheets slightly.
  • Cut pastry into strips about 1 inch wide.
  • Wrap each cheese stick tightly with pastry strips, sealing edges completely so cheese does not leak.
  • Heat 2 inches of oil in deep skillet or pot to 350°F.
  • Fry tequeños in batches until golden brown, turning as needed.
  • Remove and drain on paper towels.
  • Serve hot.

Notes

Freeze uncooked tequeños on a tray, then transfer to a freezer bag. Fry directly from frozen adding 1 to 2 extra minutes.
