This delicious Hazelnut Affogato recipe is made with caramelized hazelnuts, hazelnut ice cream, and instant coffee for a delicious no bake dessert idea.
Caramelized Hazelnut Affogato
Is it a dessert? Is it a drink? This Caramelized Hazelnut Affogato can be both. You can eat it or drink it depending on your preference. Affogato actually means “drowned” in Italian because the scoop of frozen ice cream is “drowned” with hot delicious coffee or espresso.
Affogatos are super simple to make and definitely tasty. I decided to kick it up a notch by adding caramelized hazelnuts combined with hazelnut ice cream and ice cream wafers. The flavor is incredible and the crunch is amazing. I love how the wafers get soft when they are hit by the hot coffee and the ice cream gets all soft.
If one day you get a knock on the door and some unexpected guests arrive, this Caramelized Hazelnut Affogato is the perfect dessert since it can be made at the last minute.
All you need is hot coffee, ice cream and any topping you have lying around in your pantry. You can serve them in mugs, bowls, or anything you may like. Basically, this affogato is super easy and customizable.
For this Affogato, in particular, I used Nescafe Clásico Instant Coffee. It’s delicious, aromatic and can be made in the stove and microwave. No coffee machine needed!
Growing up, I used to eat lunch at my grandma’s house every Saturday. When dessert was over and coffee arrived, that’s when the conversation happened.
I looked forward to my sobremesa moment every week, and now with this delicious Caramelized Hazelnut Affogato I take it to a whole new level by combining coffee and dessert time in one single bowl. Clever isn’t it?

- For Caramelized Hazelnuts
- 2 cups of roasted hazelnuts peeled
- 1/2 Cup of granulated sugar
- 2 Tablespoons of Water
- For Affogato
- 2 cups of hot coffee or espresso
- 1 Pint of Ice Cream
- Wafers optional
For Caramelized Hazelnuts
Preheat oven to 300 Degrees Fahrenheit
Line a sheet pan with parchment paper
In a heavy bottomed pot heat the sugar and water together on medium heat. Don't stir
When the caramel turns amber in color, add the hazelnuts and mix well until coated
Throw the hazelnuts in the sheet pan
Bake for 20-25 minutes mixing them every 5-7 minutes
Let it cool and enjoy!
Place ice cream, wafers and hazelnuts in a glass, cup, mug or bowl
Pour hot coffee over this mixture
