Charoset Recipe (Date and Walnut Spread)
Looking for an easy Charoset Recipe for Passover?
This delicious date and walnut spread is naturally sweet, rich, and full of flavor. Made with just a handful of ingredients, it comes together in minutes and is a beautiful addition to any Passover Seder table.
I am so excited by this time of the year when family traditions inspire me to make seasonal recipes like this one.

Whether you celebrate Passover or not, this Charoset Recipe is absolutely delicious. Imagine a sweet date and walnut spread served over crackers with creamy goat cheese. It makes a wonderful appetizer for a dinner party or elegant gathering.
I personally make it every year for our Seder, the ceremonial Passover dinner. During the meal, charoset is traditionally eaten with matzo and symbolizes the mortar used by the Israelites while they were enslaved in Egypt.
What Is Charoset?
Charoset is a traditional Passover dish served during the Seder meal. While every family has its own version, the purpose remains the same: to represent the mortar used by the Israelites in ancient Egypt.
Charoset recipes vary widely depending on cultural background and geographic region. Ashkenazi charoset is often made with apples, walnuts, cinnamon, and wine, while many Sephardic versions use dates, figs, raisins, nuts, and spices.
This date and walnut version is rich, naturally sweet, and one of my favorite Passover recipes.

Why You’ll Love This Charoset Recipe
- Ready in just 3 minutes
- No cooking required
- Perfect for Passover Seder
- Naturally sweet from dates
- Easy to make ahead
- Delicious with matzo, apples, crackers, and cheese
My grandmother makes charoset with apples and cinnamon, which tastes somewhat similar to apple butter. Other Jewish families prepare it using dates and walnuts.
The latter has always been my favorite. It’s sweet, nutty, and packed with flavor. Every time I make this Charoset Recipe, I prepare an extra batch because it disappears so quickly.
Forget peanut butter and try this spread on toast or sandwiches. I promise you won’t be sorry. If you’re serving children, simply use grape juice instead of wine.
The best thing is that it only takes a few minutes to prepare. No cooking or heating required.
Simply place all the ingredients into a food processor or high-speed blender and blend until you reach your desired consistency. Some people prefer it chunky, while others enjoy it smooth.
Either way, it’s delicious.

How To Serve Charoset
While charoset is traditionally served during Passover, there are plenty of other delicious ways to enjoy it.
- Spread on matzo during the Passover Seder
- Serve with sliced apples and pears
- Add to a cheese board with goat cheese or brie
- Spread on crackers or toast
- Enjoy by the spoonful as a sweet snack
Can You Make Charoset Ahead Of Time?
Yes. In fact, many people prefer making charoset a day ahead because the flavors have time to blend together. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
