Beer Battered French Fries Recipe (2026 Update)
Updated for 2026: This post has been refreshed with clearer tips, better frying notes, and more details on how to get the crispiest fries every time.
If you love crispy fries with a thick, golden coating, this recipe is going to make you very happy. These beer-battered fries are crunchy on the outside, fluffy inside, and ridiculously satisfying with tartar sauce, hot sauce, or, honestly, just straight from the tray while nobody is looking.
And the best part? You do not have to peel potatoes, cut fries, soak them, or do any of the things that make homemade fries feel like a full afternoon project. Frozen fries are the shortcut that makes this recipe easy and reliable.
Why This Recipe Works
The combination of frozen fries and beer batter gives you a fry that is crisp, flavorful, and much easier than starting from scratch. The frozen fries hold their shape well, while the batter creates that crunchy, fried shell that makes these feel like something you would order at a pub.
It is the kind of side dish or party snack that disappears fast, so make extra and save yourself the emotional damage of running out.

Why Use Frozen Fries?
Frozen fries are the secret here. They save time, keep the process simple, and give you a sturdy base for the batter. Since they are already cut and partially prepared, they make it much easier to get even results.
This recipe works especially well with crinkle-cut fries because they are thicker and hold the batter beautifully, but sweet potato fries also bring a delicious contrast in flavor.
Best Fries for Beer Batter
I like using both crinkle-cut fries and sweet potato fries here. Crinkle fries are wider and meatier, which makes them especially good for dipping and holding onto that crispy coating. Sweet potato fries bring a deeper sweetness that pairs nicely with creamy sauces.

How to Keep Fries Crispy
- Fry in batches so the oil temperature does not drop too much
- Do not overcrowd the pot
- Keep finished fries warm in the oven while frying the next batch
- Season right after frying so the salt sticks well
If the oil cools down too much, the fries will absorb more oil and lose that beautiful crunch. Crispy fries are a temperature game, and yes, the oil has feelings.
What to Serve with Beer-Battered Fries
These fries are amazing with tartar sauce, hot sauce, garlic aioli, or even ketchup if you like to keep things classic. I also love them with a giant pickle on the side because that briny crunch balances the richness so well.
They make a perfect party snack, game day side, burger companion, or fun weekend treat.

How to Make Beer Battered French Fries
The process is simple. Coat the frozen fries with flour, dip them into the batter, and fry until golden and crisp.
When they come out of the oil, season with salt, pepper, and chopped parsley while they are still hot. Then serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Why Are My Beer-Battered Fries Soggy?
Soggy fries usually happen when the oil is not hot enough or the pan is overcrowded. Frying in small batches makes a big difference. It also helps to let excess batter drip off before frying so the coating stays crisp instead of heavy.
Can You Make These Ahead?
These are best served fresh, but you can keep them warm in a low oven while you fry the rest. That makes them easier to serve for parties without losing too much crispness.

I know I will get a few boo’s for asking this question: what can I replace the beer with as my husband is an alcoholic?
Hi Judith! great question. There are a few brands of good non-alcoholic beers out there, like the Heineken 0.0
If anyone were to judge you for your question, they have serious issues.
I have 2 alcoholics in my family and also non alcohol drinkers. it’s no problem
to make adjustments for beer or wine. Good luck to you.
Just use either root beer or seltzer
