I can’t believe Rosh Hashanah is only a few days away, there’s so much prep to do that I don’t know where to start. Luckily, my cousin is hosting it in her home this year so I will only need to focus on a couple of dishes. The chicken and dessert.
This Apple Honey Cake In A Jar is wonderful to give out as presents to your friends and family for Rosh Hashanah. Just attach a nice card or note and it will make a great impression.
Usually, honey cakes are made in loaf or bundt shape. But this year I wanted to make something different that will surprise and please its recipients. I usually bake my delicious Grandma’s Walnut Honey Bread, I haven’t baked that recipe in a jar yet, but it’s on top of my to-do list for next week.
If you’ve never heard of an apple honey cake before, it’s a very moist cake that has lots of flavors. I added coffee, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg to give it a complex holiday taste. Jews eat honey during Rosh Hashanah to have a blessed and sweet New Year.
Per your preference, this recipe is enough to make 1 loaf or 4-5 cakes in a jar. I used my favorite Weck Jars that have a beautiful shape. You can certainly use your favorite brand, just make sure the jars are well greased on the inside so the Apple honey cake doesn’t stick and can be easily eaten.
I loved the touch of the spoon. That means that you can eat the cake wherever you are. Perfect for an afternoon pick me up at the office.

- 1/2 cup of Honey
- 1 Green Apple peeled and cored
- 1 Egg
- 1 1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon All Purpose Flour
- 1/2 teaspoon Baking Powder
- 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda
- 1/2 cup Brewed Coffee or Tea
- 5 tablespoons Vegetable oil
- 1/3 cup Sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg
- 1/8 teaspoon Ground cloves
- Pinch of salt
- 1/2 cup Chopped Nuts optional
Preheat oven to 350 Degrees Fahrenheit
Oil the inside of the jars
Place jars on a rimmed sheet pan
Grate the apple and squeeze out to remove excess liquid
Place grated apple in a bowl. Mix with egg, coffee, oil and honey
In another bowl mix flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and salt and nuts if using
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ones and mix with a whisk until combined. Do not overmix
Pour the mixture into the jars filling them HALFWAY (to prevent overflowing)
Bake for 20-30 minutes or until golden and springy on top
Remove from oven and let them cool
This recipe yields for one loaf.
