Easy Croque Monsieur Sandwiches
When it comes to the ultimate grilled chilled sandwiches leave it to the french, they know their stuff. I’ve tried many, but nothing compares to a well-made croque monsieur.
Imagine a ham and cheese sandwich topped with velvety dijon flavored bechamel sauce, and gruyere cheese all melting together in harmony. Mind blowing.
This Croque-Monsieur can be eaten as a quick weeknight dinner, a hearty breakfast, or for Sunday Brunch. They are so easy, that you can make a few at a time without skipping a beat, perfect for entertaining as well.
Croque means “biting” or “to bite” and Monsieur is mister. So basically, you’re biting a mister. Who’s mister? Well ask the french, not me, I’m just a humble chunky Venezuelan.
But I do know that if you add a poached or fried egg on top, the sandwich becomes a Croque Madame, AKA biting a lady.
To make this sandwich, you need a sturdy bread, regular sandwich bread will not survive the bechamel topping, it would turn into a mushy mess. In France, they tend to use brioche or baguette.
I used the new Sara Lee® Artesano™ Bread which is cut thicker cut than regular sandwich bread and tastes rich and buttery. Perfect for these Croque Monsieurs.
Now it’s time to put on your berets, get those bistro chairs out of the garage because tonight we are croquin’ 🙂 Try practicing monsieur in your best french pronunciation. Oui Oui Madame.
