  • Fresh and citrusy
  • Naturally vegan and gluten-free

What Are Hearts of Palm?

Hearts of palm are harvested from the inner core of certain palm trees. They have a delicate flavor and a tender but slightly firm texture.

In Venezuela, hearts of palm are commonly served in salads and appetizers. In the United States, you can usually find canned hearts of palm in the canned vegetable aisle of most supermarkets.

They are already cooked and ready to eat, so simply drain, slice, and add them to the ceviche.

Ingredients You’ll Need

This easy vegan ceviche is made with fresh, simple ingredients:

  • Canned hearts of palm
  • Ripe avocado
  • Red onion
  • Jalapeño
  • Red bell pepper
  • Fresh cilantro
  • Lime juice
  • Orange juice
  • Vegetable oil or olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper

The lime juice provides acidity, while the orange juice adds a small amount of natural sweetness that balances the dressing.

Tips for the Best Hearts of Palm Ceviche

  • Drain the hearts of palm thoroughly before slicing.
  • Cut the vegetables into small, evenly sized pieces.
  • Add the dressing gradually because you may not need all of it.
  • Toss gently so the avocado keeps its shape.
  • For the freshest texture, add the avocado shortly before serving.
  • Chill for 20 to 30 minutes if you have time so the flavors can blend.

Easy Variations

This recipe is easy to customize depending on the flavors you enjoy.

  • Add diced mango or pineapple for sweetness.
  • Leave some jalapeño seeds in for extra heat.
  • Add cucumber for additional crunch.
  • Stir in diced tomatoes.
  • Add a few dashes of hot sauce.
  • Use chopped green onion instead of red onion.

How to Serve Hearts of Palm Ceviche

Serve this ceviche chilled with tortilla chips, crackers, tostadas, or lettuce cups. It also makes a delicious topping for fish tacos, vegan tacos, grain bowls, and salads.

For parties, spoon it into small glasses or individual bowls for an elegant presentation. For casual meals, serve it family-style in a large bowl.

Make-Ahead and Storage

You can prepare the hearts of palm, onion, pepper, jalapeño, cilantro, and dressing several hours ahead. For the best texture and color, add the avocado closer to serving time.

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. The avocado may soften slightly, but the ceviche will remain flavorful.
