Homemade Crunchy Apple Chips Recipe

Summer is here and is time to stock up on snacks for the kids.

Hubby and I are thinking of making mini road trips with the girls so making a big batch of Apple Chips is the perfect crunchy and healthy snack for kids to take on the road. So throw out all those fried Potato Chips and these!.

To perfect this Apple Chips Recipe it took me a few tries to achieve the right thickness so the chips will be super crunchy and not chewy.

You can serve them as kids snacks but also they are great for dipping during dinner parties. You will also love these Sweet Potato Chips, Roasted Crispy Chickpeas, and yummy Roasted Pumpkin Seeds.

Crunchy Apple Chips - Made in the oven without the need of a dehydrator. Easy, healthy and super crunchy!

If you would like to mix it up you can use different types of apples, fuji, granny smith, red delicious, gala and so on. It’s a great idea to mix in the sweetest with the tartest apples to achieve flavor Nirvana.

Apple Chips Recipe

4 Apples (any kind you want) sliced thinly, about 1/6″ thickness. I used my trusty Mandolin so every piece is uniform in size. I cut out the bottom to start with a flat apple slice.

Crunchy Apple Chips - Made in the oven without the need of a dehydrator. Easy, healthy and super crunchy!

Preheat oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

Arrange apple sizes in a  single layer on a sheet pan fitted with parchment paper.  Remove any remaining seeds from the slices (that was my daughter’s job).

For each Apple, I got about 20 slices, so one sheet pan per apple. This can vary depending on the apple size or the thickness of your chips. You have no idea how they will shrink during cooking.

Sprinkle Stevia, sugar or any other natural sweetener. I used 2 packets of Stevia per 80 slices of apples.

Sprinkle cinnamon over the apples (optional). You can also add in any spice you’d like. Next time I make them I would love to try the apple pie seasoning or maybe a spicy one like chili or cayenne pepper.

Bake in the oven for 90 minutes. After that time flip them and bake for one more hour. Turn oven off and leave them inside for a few hours or overnight.

DO NOT OPEN THE OVEN DURING THIS TIME. Resist your peeking!. I know it’s hard but it’s worth it. You will not believe how crunchy they will be.

When they come out of the oven simply place them in a resealable bag. They will last for about a week at room temp although they probably will be gone by then;).

So will you give them a try?. I promise you will love them!

I make these too but without anything added to them. I core the apples and then slice them and instead of using parchment paper, I put my cookie cooling racks on top of my cookie trays, add the apple slices and dry as you directed. lifting them off the pan seems to make them crunchier

OH MY GOD. I made these this afternoon and was blown away by how good they were! I didn’t use any sweetener, just a sprinkle of cinnamon, and it was still like flavour fireworks. They didn’t need as long in the oven as your recipe calls for, but I sliced them really thin, and they still crisped up nicely. I ate the entire first batch by myself, so naturally, I had to make some more after that. Thanks for sharing this!

Is there any way to make these last longer in the container? I see that you said they should last a week in an air-tight container, room temp. I’m making some of these now for a trip at the end of next week. I don’t want them to go bad!

I honestly said a week just to be safe. I’m sure they can last longer as long as they’re stored properly.

I am into combining sweet and savory so I would use Hummus and Baba Ganoush. If you’re more into sweets, try caramel sauce, cinnamon cream cheese dip, etc.

I haven’t tried freezing them Nicole. But they keep very well in a zip lock bag for a few weeks at room temperature. I can’t test them longer than that because we can’t resist them!

I just made these and I followed the directions exactly, even leaving them in the oven for like 6 hours. They came out floppy and chewy. I used Gala and cut them on the thinnest setting my mandolin would go. Where did I go wrong? Is it because I did two pans at a time in the oven? Should I have cooked them longer?

Hi Monica, did they brown or shrivel a bit? Is the temperature of your oven calibrated? I’m guessing, if it’s not then maybe they needed a few more minutes of cooking before turning the oven off

I love the apole chips you can buy at the store. Unfortunately, they don’t fit into my new paleo lifestyle. I have tried multiple apple chip recipes and have failed every time. I tried your recipe this evening and they turned out perfect! I didn’t add sugar or cinnamon, but they were still crunchy and bursting with flavor! Thank you so much for the great recipe!
